Dear Chancellor I am writing to you to support Campaign for Better Transport’s call for a rail fares freeze in 2023. I believe that this green form of transport does not compare well in terms of price with the more polluting motor car, let alone with plane travel, where of course no kerosene tax is paid. It is clear that many people are put off taking the train by an overcomplicated ticketing system coupled with excessive annual fare rises. We must prioritise fair fares on the railways to tackle the cost-of-living crisis, the climate emergency and the problems of air pollution caused by road vehicles, which the government has identified as the number one environmental health threat. We need train tickets to be fairer, more flexible, and more affordable. For each £1 invested in the railways, £2.50 goes back into the wider economy, so investing in the railways makes good economic sense. The railways also connect us to opportunities, to leisure, retail and to one another, so rail travel is good for people, good for the planet and good for the pound. Strong action from the Treasury would show that the government understands the challenges we face as a country, and that the railways can be at the heart of a better, fairer, greener future. I look forward to your reply.
