I’m concerned that train fares are becoming totally unaffordable. Fares have again increased much faster than average wages are, meaning train fares will have increased by more than 23 per cent since 2010. It feels as if rail users like me are being constantly hit with increases. So today I am writing to you to say: enough is enough.
People like me are being priced off the railways. It’s common knowledge that the UK has some of the most expensive train fares in Europe and if train fares continue to rise so much faster than wages then at some point something will have to give. I’m worried that our railways are becoming too exclusive for ordinary people.
At the current rate, fares revenue in 2018 will cover 103 percent of the operating costs of the railways, up from 80 percent in 2009. Rather than profiting from passengers, Government must do much more to limit any further increases in fares.
We need a railway that is affordable for all, not just the few.
I look forward to your response.
